ABOUT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Modern Western school medicine treats the problem of high blood pressure with synthetic pharmaceutical drugs that block certain natural reactions of the body that are seen as the cause of the higher blood pressure.

So called ACE-blockers are the most common drugs used to lower the blood pressure. They work by blocking the body´s production of an enzyme, angiotensin II, that would otherwise cause contraction of the blood vessels. And narrower blood vessels require higher pressure to make the blood circulate as it should.
ACE is short for angiotensin-converting enzyme.

ARBs are another kind of drugs, working in a different way to achieve similar effects as ACE blockers.

ARB is short for angiotensin II receptor blockers

These drugs block the effect of angiotensin II, an enzyme that contracts blood vessels, making them narrower. ARBs therefore help widen blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily, which lowers blood pressure. ARBs are generally prescribed for people who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors.

DRI is short for Direct Renin Inhibitors, another similar group of drugs which have the same effect by a different mechanism, and are also mostly used for people who cannot tolerate ACE blockers.

There are a number of different blood pressure drugs in this category with similar effect, although the side effects can vary from one brand to another. Among declared side effects, said to be rare, I note dry cough, vertigo, headache, fatigue, lack of appetite, stomach upset, diarrhea, fever, skin eruptions, aching joints, and numbness.

Interestingly, it is pointed out that neither ACE-blockers nor ARBs lower the blood pressure as much in ethnic black Africans as in non-blacks.

My personal comment is that the entire way of thinking around the problem of blood pressure is flawed. Consequently, it will lead to undesired results in the long term, even if the targeted symptom is reduced temporarily.

Instead of trying to find out the reason why the body reacts as it does, i.e. the cause of the problem, one just looks for ways to interfere with, and block, the body´s natural defence mechanisms, developed over millennia of experience and evolution.
So, how should you think instead, to target the underlying cause, and not just the symptom?
